Howard Modern: The Legacy of the African American University’s Architects and Architecture, Oct. 26
Docomomo DC and Howard University’s Department of Architecture will host a tour of modern architecture on Howard's main campus in Washington, DC. Howard University is a historically black university with a long-standing commitment to architectural education and practice. The tour will feature modern buildings designed by African American architects including Hilyard Robinson and Paul R. Williams and explore the role of the modern movement in the campus’ development.
Professor Hazel Edwards will launch the tour with an overview of campus history. Edwards is Chair of the Department of Architecture and co-author of The Long Walk: The Placemaking Legacy of Howard University. Faculty and students will then lead tours of campus, highlighting several modern buildings.
The tour will include opportunities to view the interior of campus buildings, otherwise open only to the Howard community, and to hear from campus experts. Professor and architect Bradford Grant will provide insight into the design of the Just Biology Building. Campus Architect Derrek Lucien Niec-Williams will discuss how Howard’s modern buildings are being managed today and their relationship to the 1932 Campus Master Plan, laid out by Albert Irvin Cassell, Howard’s first black University Architect.
The tour will close with a reception at the Mackey Building.
