Join Docomomo DC for a special tour of the National Presbyterian Church, a striking example of mid-century modern sacred architecture. Completed in 1967 and designed by noted architect Harold E. Wagoner, the church is a landmark of modern gothic design and an essential stop for anyone interested in the city’s postwar architecture.
This event is part of DOCOMOMO US Tour Day 2025, celebrating this year’s national theme, “Places of Worship.”
The morning begins with a talk and guided tour led by two speakers with deep knowledge of the church’s past and present:
Diane Stewart, retired Facilities Director of the National Presbyterian Church, will share the building’s fascinating history and the story behind the campus master plan.
Jennie Gwin, Partner at Beyer Blinder Belle (BBB), will discuss BBB’s recent renovation and addition work that revitalized the church campus, improved accessibility, and reimagined spaces for worship and community gatherings.
Participants will explore key spaces including the main sanctuary, the intimate chapel, and a series of striking abstract stained-glass windows. This is a rare chance to see the church’s modernist details up close and learn how thoughtful design continues to support the congregation’s mission and growth.
