Docomomo DC Snapshot: Ira Aldridge Theater
DC's Howard University is home to a range of noteworthy modernist architecture, including the Ira Aldridge Theater, completed in 1961. Clad in square limestone panels and accented with green tile and neon lettering, this modestly-sized theater also features a gently curved elevation, showing the influence of the Art Moderne style. The theater's stripped-down aesthetic was a hallmark of architects Hilyard Robinson and Paul R. Williams, two of the country's most prominent African American architects of the twentieth century.
