On January 16, arts venue Hillyer co-hosts CultureBlast: Mies’s MLK Library, a conversation on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's influence, with AIA|DC and the DC Public Library. Sparked by an exhibition currently on view at Hillyer—Neil Forrest's The Washingtonian Service, which investigates Mies van der Rohe's MLK Memorial Library as the result of DC's search for modern identity in built form—panelists will discuss the Bauhaus founder's legacy. Joining in the conversation are Bradford C. Grant, a professor as Howard University's School of Architecture and Design; Gary F. Martinez, FAIA, president and principal of Martinez+Johnson Architecture, which has partnered with Mecanoo on the MLK Memorial Library's redesign; and Richard Reyes-Gavilan, executive director of DC Public Library.
